Research Databases

Ryde Library Service subscribes to many online databases and research resources, containing a wide variety of information on subjects such as health, science, law, history and literature; as well as newspaper and magazine articles. Some of these databases are freely available, for others you will need to LOGIN in order to access them.

All are available in the Library and in most cases you can access these resources from home or anywhere you have an internet connection.

To select the specific database you'd like to search, just click on the database you would like to search and enter the barcode number on your library card in the space provided. If the database you would like to search requires a password, please ask the library staff.


Gale OneFile: Fine Arts - search millions of articles about drama, music, art history, and filmmaking.


Gale In Context: Biography - Information on the world’s most influential people. Over 650,000 biographical entries cover a range of historically significant figures and present-day newsmakers. Narrative biographies, news, magazine, and multimedia content.


Gale Business: Entrepreneurship - Learn how to start, finance, or manage your small business. Includes sample business plans, how to guides, articles, and more.

Gale Business: Plan Builder - A step-by-step online planning tool for starting, managing and optimising a business or non-profit, equipped with popular, proven business planning tools and templates.

Gale Business Insights: Global - Compare global economies, countries, and industries with in-depth analysis on over 400,000 companies.

Consumer Affairs and Interest

Choice Magazine - The Australian consumer magazine that provides reporting and testing on consumer products and services.

Gale In Context: Global Issues - A database designed to support global awareness. Analyze important global issues and events through topic overviews, international viewpoints, news, and multimedia content. 

Gale In Context: Opposing Viewpoints - Find overviews, news, and opinions on hundreds of today's important social issues. 

Gale OneFile: Australia and New Zealand - Access comprehensive periodical content with a focus on Australia and New Zealand, complemented by global news, reference, and multimedia coverage.

Gale OneFile: News - Access major newspapers online to search articles instantly by title, headline, date, or other fields. Includes Australian News Limited and Fairfax newspapers, and includes thousands of images, radio and TV broadcasts and transcripts.

Demographics and Statistics

Australian Bureau of Statistics - Along with free statistics, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) also provide related information and services on a wide range of economic, social and environmental matters.

Community Profile - The City of Ryde Community Profile provides demographic analysis for the City and its suburbs based on results from the 2016, 2011, 2006, 2001, 1996 and 1991 Censuses of Population and Housing. The profile is updated with population estimates when the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Population Forecasts- The City of Ryde population and household forecasts present what is driving population change in the community and how the population, age structure and household types will change each year between 2016 and 2036.

Social Atlas - The City of Ryde Social Atlas presents Census data as a series of thematic maps that show how particular population groups are distributed across the City of Ryde.


Encyclopedia Britannica Online - This site provides access to Encyclopaedia Britannica, Britannica Student, Britannica Junior, and Britannica Concise Encyclopaedia.

Gale In Context: Environmental Studies - Understand environmental issues that affect people globally through topic overviews, journals, news, and multimedia content. Gale in Context Environmental Studies provides reference content in the areas of the environment, energy and natural resources.

GreenFILE - A research database that focuses on the relationship between human beings and the environment.

National Geographic Kids - Featuring content designed for younger patrons: articles from National Geographic Kids magazines from 2009 to current, National Geographic Kids eBooks, National Geographic Kids videos and images

National Geographic Virtual Library - offers access to the complete archive of National Geographic magazine — every page of every issue — along with a cross-searchable collection of books, maps, images, and videos.

Family History and Genealogy

Ancestry Library Edition - A genealogy tool which provides instant access to a wide range of resources for genealogical and historical research.
For use in the Ryde libraries only. Remote access for Ancestry Library Edition has been extended until 31 December 2021.

NSW Family History Document Service - Images of historical documents relating to family records in New South Wales dating between 1850 to 1920.

Cultural Atlas - a free online resource that provides comprehensive information on the cultural backgrounds of Australia’s biggest migrant populations.

Gale General OneFile - access general interest magazines and key serials in a single resource.


Gale Health and Wellness - Access full-text medical journals, magazines, reference works, multimedia, and much more. This comprehensive consumer health resource provides authoritative information on the full range of health-related issues, from current disease and disorder information to in-depth coverage of alternative medical practices.

Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme - A complete listing of all medicines subsidized by the Australian Government with information for consumers and health professionals.

Australian Newspapers: Historic Australian Newspapers 1803-2007 - Access to historic Australian newspapers from the National Library of Australia.

Gale Literature: Books and Authors- A readers’ advisory database for discovery of books by author, genre and topic. Search and match reading interests to books, authors, genres, or topics.

Gale Literature Resource Centre - Find up-to-date biographies, overviews, full-text criticisms, audio interviews, and reviews on writers from all eras.
