Research Databases

Ryde Library Service subscribes to many online databases and research resources, containing a wide variety of information on subjects such as health, science, law, history and literature; as well as newspaper and magazine articles. Some of these databases are freely available, for others you will need to LOGIN in order to access them.

All are available in the Library and in most cases you can access these resources from home or anywhere you have an internet connection.

To select the specific database you'd like to search, just click on the database you would like to search and enter the barcode number on your library card in the space provided. If the database you would like to search requires a password, please ask the library staff.

Consumer Affairs and Interest

Choice Magazine - The Australian consumer magazine that provides reporting and testing on consumer products and services.

Points of View Reference Centre - A full text database designed to provide students and schools with a series of essays that present multiple sides of a current issues.

Craft

Hobbies and Craft Reference Centre - Comprehensive full-text content for many of the most popular hobbies, crafts and recreation activities, offering detailed "how-to" instructions and creative ideas.

Demographics and Statistics

Australian Bureau of Statistics - Along with free statistics, the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) also provide related information and services on a wide range of economic, social and environmental matters.

Community Profile - The City of Ryde Community Profile provides demographic analysis for the City and its suburbs based on results from the 2016, 2011, 2006, 2001, 1996 and 1991 Censuses of Population and Housing. The profile is updated with population estimates when the Australian Bureau of Statistics.

Population Forecasts- The City of Ryde population and household forecasts present what is driving population change in the community and how the population, age structure and household types will change each year between 2016 and 2036.

Social Atlas - The City of Ryde Social Atlas presents Census data as a series of thematic maps that show how particular population groups are distributed across the City of Ryde.

Encyclopaedias

Encyclopedia Britannica Online - This site provides access to Encyclopaedia Britannica, Britannica Student, Britannica Junior, and Britannica Concise Encyclopaedia.

GreenFILE - A research database that focuses on the relationship between human beings and the environment.

Family History and Genealogy

Ancestry Library Edition - A genealogy tool which provides instant access to a wide range of resources for genealogical and historical research.

NSW Family History Document Service - Images of historical documents relating to family records in New South Wales dating between 1850 to 1920.

General Reference

Academic Search Premier - This database contains the full text of more than 2,100 journals in a variety of subjects, with many dating back to 1985.

Australia/New Zealand Reference Centre - A collection of Australian and New Zealand specific magazines, newspapers and newswires, reference books, and company information.

Cultural Atlas - a free online resource that provides comprehensive information on the cultural backgrounds of Australia’s biggest migrant populations.

MasterFile Complete - Provides full text for more than 2,100 general reference publications with full text information dating as far back as 1975.

Pharmaceutical Benefits Scheme - A complete listing of all medicines subsidized by the Australian Government with information for consumers and health professionals.

History Reference Centre - Designed for secondary schools, public libraries, junior/community colleges and undergraduate research, the database features full text for more than 1,990 reference books, encyclopedias and non-fiction books from leading history publishers; full text from more than 150 leading history periodicals; and also includes historical documents, biographies of historical figures, photos and maps, and historical video.
